There are substitutes for oil but nothing can replace our drinking water. Food Shortage. Oil Nothing can be moved, manufactured, transported, built, planted, mined or harvested without the liquid fuels that we get from petroleum. Efforts are underway to develop cheaper and more sustainable energy such as solar power, wind power and other forms of renewable energy that can replace oil and fossil fuel.

Resource use and its consequences

Increased population. Forests Imagine a world without trees. An estimated 18 million acres of forests are destroyed each year. They produce the oxygen we breathe. All of these rights are equally important, and they are all interdependent. Environmental rights are human rights, as people's livelihoods, their health, and sometimes their very existence depend upon the quality of and their access to the surrounding environment as well as the recognition of their rights to information, participation, security and redress.

Rights can be asserted in a variety of ways: for example, by appealing directly to the violating government, international financial institution or corporation; through international, regional and national courts; by applying public and media pressure; and by building coalitions with others seeking similar rights.
